Benefits to our Customers

Cullet provides four primary benefits to our glass container and fiberglass customers. Specifically, cullet:
  • Reduces glass furnace energy costs - According to the Glass Packaging Institute, each 10% of the virgin material batch displaced by cullet saves 2% to 5% of the energy used to make glass. As a result, using cullet represents a significant opportunity to reduce energy costs, which is especially meaningful to customers in a rising energy cost environment.
  • Reduces environmental emissions - The major emissions to the air from a glass container plant include: Carbon Dioxide (0.5 tons per ton of glass produced), Nitrogen from the Compressed Air used in the production process (1.8 tons per ton of glass produced), Water (.25 tons per ton of glass produced), and smaller quantities of NOx and SOx. Cullet, having already undergone the chemical process to make glass, significantly reduces emissions and helps glass producers meet air emissions standards.
  • Increased production thru existing infrastructure – A ton of cullet replaced about 1.12 tons of virgin raw material. As a result, a glass container or fiberglass manufacturer can increase production output by using cullet. Given that many manufacturers are running at near capacity, increasing throughput is a highly valuable quality of cullet.
  • Increases furnace life - Increasing the cullet content in glass manufacturing allows a furnace to be operated at a lower temperature and, as a result, prolongs the furnace’s life.
