Container and plate glass is 100% recyclable, in that it can be melted repeatedly to produce a glass product.
The recycling of glass containers increased significantly through the mid-1990s. The implementation of container deposit legislation in the 1970s and 1980s was a significant factor in increasing recovery of glass containers. By 1990, ten states had implemented container deposit laws, but only 15% of the US population had access to curbside recycling. According to the EPA, The US generates about 11 million tons of glass in the MSW stream annually, of which only 22% is recycled.

The US recycling rate of glass containers is significantly less than recycling rates across most of the world.
